Approach

My therapeutic approach is to understand your current and past experiences and to use psychological theories to make sense of the development and maintenance of difficulties which interfere with your day to day life. Through a combination of my psychological training and expertise and your knowledge and interpretation of your experiences we will make sense of your concerns and problems. With greater understanding of your difficulties in the context of your relationships, social circumstances, life events and the sense you have made of them there is often a feeling of empowerment which drives forward positive change.

Therapy is then informed by this formulation, the evidence base (i.e. research demonstrating effective treatment approaches for particular psychological problems) and by your informed preference. Therapy models might include cognitive behaviour therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy and compassion-focused therapy. We can discuss which approach appears the best fit for our work together.

Experience

I completed my clinical psychology doctorate at the University of Leeds and my neuropsychology training at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neurosciences in London. I am a registered Practitioner Psychologist with the Health Care Professions Council and have Chartered Psychologist status with the British Psychological Society (BPS). I hold the Qualification in Clinical Neuropsychology and am on the BPS Specialist Register of Clinical Neuropsychologists. I am an experienced clinical supervisor.

I have worked across the lifespan, treating people with anxiety, depression, trauma, adjustment to illness and injury, interpersonal difficulties and low self-esteem. This has been in the UK and overseas, in both the developed and developing worlds, with children and young people, with working age adults and with older people, in a range of mental health and physical health settings. I have led service development within the NHS, provided teaching and training to clinical psychology courses, and clinical supervision.

I have a particular interest in working with people and their families who experience mental health difficulties within the context of long term health conditions and neurological conditions such as acquired brain injury, dementia and other neurodegenerative conditions. However, I also work with people who are in good physical health but would like help with mental health difficulties including work-place stress, sleep problems, anxiety, phobias and low mood. I draw on a range of therapeutic approaches including cognitive behavioural therapy, compassion-focused therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy and mindfulness-based approaches.
