Approach

I have always been interested in how thoughts can influence our feelings and actions and I am keen to inspire positive change in people and in particular, those who may have felt disadvantaged in life. I know that life can be difficult and sometimes it can feel as though nobody understands what you are going through. In my work with my clients, I believe it is important to take the time to truly listen and understand them and their experience of difficulties from their perspective. I believe that each person is unique and so I do not adopt a ‘one size fits all’ approach but rather an individualised tailored treatment plan to help my clients achieve their goals. I adopt an integrative therapeutic style that employs a person centred cognitive behavioural approach that also incorporates compassion focused and humanistic orientations. I believe establishing a good therapeutic alliance is important for treatment effectiveness and promoting engagement in therapy which is why I strive to maintain a good working alliance in my work with clients.

Experience

I have been involved in the field of psychology and mental health for the past 14 years. I have a wide range of experience working with a diverse group of people in the community and NHS Mental Health Services. I have also been involved in the training and supervision of junior colleagues and other mental health professionals. I am a graduate of Nottingham Trent University with a BSc in Psychology, an MSc in Psychological Wellbeing and Mental health and a professional doctorate in Counselling Psychology from London Metropolitan University. I am also a registered member of the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). Since qualifying as a Counselling Psychologist, I have worked predominantly with adults who present with complex mental health presentations such as Eating disorders, Obsessive Compulsive Disorders (OCD), Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Personality Disorders, Persistent depressive disorder (Dysthymia) and Generalised Anxiety Disorder (GAD). Working with such presentations has often involved the use of short, medium and long term Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) as well as the application of third wave CBT models such as Acceptance Commitment Therapy (ACT), Compassion Focussed Therapy (CFT), Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT) and Mindfulness. Most recently, my work has been within Child and adolescent mental health services (CAMHS) where I have had the privilege to work with young people and their families.
