Approach
Dr Fernandes’s approach to her work is imbued with a deep respect and appreciation for people and their experiences and a belief that emotional difficulties are inevitable but can be overcome. She believes in the importance of the therapeutic relationship to support people in achieving the changes that they want and that this process can be aided by principles of collaboration, problem solving and hope.
Experience
Dr Fernandes has trained for 8 years, completing a BSc in Psychology, a Postgraduate Diploma in Health Psychology, a DClinPsych at the University of East London and a Postgraduate Diploma in Cognitive Behaviour Therapy at Royal Holloway University of London.
Dr Fernandes is trained to work with adults, couples and children. She has a specialist interest in working with depression and anxiety problems using a CBT model. She has undertaken training in Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy and Behavioural Couples Therapy. She is currently working for the NHS with people who are suffering from depression and/or anxiety, offering assessment and individual or group treatment. Problems she works with include depression, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, panic, stress and anxiety, health anxiety, generalised anxiety (worry), phobias, hoarding, anger, low self-esteem and low self-confidence, relationship problems and sleep problems. Many of the people who Dr Fernandes works with also have a long term condition, such as diabetes or chronic pain.
