Approach

Gemma is a fully accredited Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapist that works in a trauma and adversity-informed way and utilises a whole-person approach. This means that she is knowledgeable about trauma and adversity, and will consider the impact that these experiences will have had on you over time. It means she tends to ask “what has happened to you?” rather than “what is wrong with you?”, and she has an increased focus upon thoughtful communication and adapting to your needs as they arise. Trauma and adversity can often underpin mental health difficulties, and Gemma can work with you to process the source of your difficulties or your current symptoms. Trauma is anything that overwhelmed your ability to cope at the time of the event, with the resources that you had at the time. Many clinicians including Gemma are working hard to change the view that trauma is only a “one-off” or “major” incident. Trauma and adversity can often be about exposure to harmful patterns of behaviours or systemic issues, even if these are subtle. She has a special interest in trauma, as well as the impact that exposure to chronic stress and trauma can have on the body.

Experience

Gemma is a fully accredited Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapist, EMDR therapist, Supervisor and Senior University Lecturer. She has also completed further training in specialist CBT therapies, alongside a range of other therapy approaches, such as Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Narrative Exposure Therapy (NET), Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). Gemma is trained and has experience in treating a wide range of mental health difficulties. This includes mild mental health problems up to severe and enduring conditions.
