Approach
With over 20 years of experience as a Clinical Psychologist in a range of settings, I have listened to many people talk of their experiences. I believe in first providing a compassionate safe space where people feel comfortable sharing their issues. Even if talking is difficult for a person I will try and make the process easier by structuring the sessions so that I can figure out how to help.
Experience
I like to use an approach which best suits the person that is in front of me therefore I will spend time getting to know them by doing a comprehensive assessment before we move onto the therapy phase. I have received further training in Compassionate Focused Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy as well as Cognitive Behaviour Therapy. This enables me to draw from these different approaches to best suit the person I am working with. I have a a number of years experience of working with people in a mixed physical and mental health setting where things can be very complex. I find the challenge of understanding how mental health can interact with physical health interesting in order to try and help people move forward. Over the years I have gained much experience in working with people with diabetes from working in an NHS Specialist Diabetes Service and have encountered many conditions that are co-morbid to diabetes. In addition in my private work see people who are struggling with their mental health and CFT and ACT therapies in particular are very helpful in understanding difficulties and why someone might be stuck. I like to understand what has brought the person to seek help at this time in their lives and in doing so need to understand their history as well as their present circumstances. In addition I often use tools in ACT to help them identify a way forward even when that way is tricky and not planned. Life can throw many curved balls and I will always seek to identify and help someone process these before looking to move on.
