What is a Psychological Assessment, and Why Do I Need One?
At HelloSelf we recommend all our members wanting to engage in psychological therapy initially complete a psychological assessment. This is a therapeutic and semi-structured interview between a LifeCoach/Assistant psychologist and a new member, which lasts for approximately 50 minutes and is usually carried out via our secure video platform.
The aim of an assessment is to understand your current difficulties, what may have caused these, and what may be maintaining any problems. The process is collaborative and a chance for our clinical team to get to know you better and get a detailed picture of what is going on for you. We also want to know what has or hasn’t worked for you in the past and how you want things to change and be different. Ultimately, we want to identify how we can help and support you. As a clinical team, we use the assessment to match our members with the best psychological therapist for their needs. It ensures the therapy and life coaching we provide is tailored to the person and ensures therapy is effective and works. If we don’t think we are the best service for you, we will tell you, and we always aim to try and signpost you to someone who can help.
If you proceed to therapy without assessment we cannot be sure we are matching you with the best clinicians for your needs. The therapist will also have to use your first session to discuss your current difficulties and goals for therapy; information which is gathered at assessment. In these circumstances, people have fed back having gained less than they had hoped from their first therapy session.
By proceeding to therapy without an accurate idea of how we can help, it could feel like a waste of time and money. It leaves you (the member) out of the decision making process and goes against our ethos to be transparent with our members and work together. The most effective way to produce the best trajectory for treatment, is collaboratively with your clinical team to ensure the focus accurately reflects your experiences and expectations.
